Imagine for a moment that the body has no individual muscles without a single group to target. What if all you had to work were the various joints of the body and the movements they were capable of performing? Letting go of traditional muscle based approach to strength training and understanding how the body actually moves are only the first steps to integrating a multiplane training approach to program design.

Formation or Movement "Programs"
The central nervous system (CNS) coordinates muscles in concert to produce specific movements by means of motor engrams. These movements program the body to develop for all general actions. Familiar frequently performed movements such as a forward lunge have highly developed and refined motor engrams. So these well-practiced programs run smoothly at many different speeds and can be executed successfully in changing environments.

Less frequently performed movements such as the side lunge balanced on a roller board have incomplete or rough engrams. The programs for these movements are a work in progress and can often go awry. To control these movements properly, you have to slow down and be very conscious of what you are doing as these unpracticed actions often feel uncoordinated. If a situation demands that they are to be performed at a higher speed, then chances of failure and injury increases dramatically.
